Single-phase charging uses one live phase. Three-phase charging spreads power across three. At the same current per phase, three-phase charging can offer roughly three times the power. The home, wallbox, cable and car must all support the arrangement.
What do one phase and three phases mean?
European low-voltage systems use a nominal 230 V from a phase to neutral. A three-phase system also provides 400 V between phases. An EV wallbox normally calculates its total power across the active phases.
The car does not receive uncontrolled mains power. The wallbox and vehicle communicate first. The vehicle’s onboard charger converts AC into the DC needed by the battery.
How do you identify your home supply?
Start with the connection agreement or electricity meter information. Labels such as “1×” and “3×” may identify the phase arrangement and main current. The distribution board may have linked three-pole devices.
A red five-pin CEE socket suggests a three-phase circuit at that socket. It does not prove the whole service has room for a new charging load.
Do not remove covers or probe live equipment. Ask the network operator or a qualified electrician when labels are unclear. They can also measure loads across the phases.
Why can a three-phase car charge faster?
Charging power is spread across three phases. At 16 A per phase, three-phase charging offers about 11 kW. A one-phase 16 A circuit offers about 3.7 kW.
The larger total does not mean each conductor carries 48 A. Each phase still carries about 16 A in the 11 kW example. The installation must be designed for its own circuit and conditions.
What happens with a single-phase car?
A single-phase onboard charger uses one phase even when connected to a three-phase wallbox. At 16 A, that may mean about 3.7 kW rather than 11 kW.
Some cars support higher single-phase current. Reaching about 7.4 kW needs 32 A on that phase at nominal voltage. Local network rules may limit large unbalanced loads, so an electrician must check what is allowed.
Check phases, not only kilowatts
Two cars can list a similar AC power but use different phase arrangements. Check the full AC input specification for the exact model and market.
Is three-phase always better?
It gives more options, but useful speed depends on the parking time and battery energy needed. A car parked for ten hours may not need 11 kW.
Three-phase charging is valuable when the battery is large, daily driving is high or several vehicles share limited time. It can also balance a substantial load across phases instead of placing it on one.
Single-phase charging is sensible when the property has no three-phase supply or the car cannot use it. A 3.7 kW or 7.4 kW installation can still replace a meaningful amount of driving overnight.
Should you upgrade the grid connection?
First calculate the energy you need between arrival and departure. Then compare it with the power already available. Do not use the full battery size when you normally replace only one day’s driving.
Ask for the cost and conditions of a three-phase connection before buying equipment. The network operator may need to change the service. The distribution board and charging circuit may also need work.
Dynamic load management can use spare capacity instead of applying one fixed EV limit. An electrical assessment still decides whether the connection needs an upgrade. The system cannot create phases or exceed the service capacity.
Frequently asked questions
How can I tell whether my home has three phases?
Check the supply documents, meter and main switch labels, then ask the network operator or an electrician. A red CEE socket is a clue, but it does not confirm spare capacity.
Can a three-phase wallbox work on single phase?
Some models can be configured for single-phase operation, while others cannot. Check the model instructions and installation design before purchase.
Can a single-phase EV use a three-phase charger?
Usually yes when the connector and charging standards match. The car uses the phase arrangement its onboard charger supports, so it may draw less than the wallbox rating.
Is upgrading to three phases always worthwhile?
No. It is worthwhile only when the added charging capacity or other planned loads justify the network and installation work. Slow overnight charging may already meet your needs.
