Schuko is convenient and slow. CEE is built for industrial duty and can provide more current or three phases. The right option depends on the exact socket, circuit and car. Colour alone is not enough to choose a charger.
What is a Schuko socket?
Schuko usually means the Type F household plug and socket. Check the portable charger’s exact supply plug against the socket instead of assuming compatibility from a country list.
The household socket is useful because it is widely available. At 10 A, it provides about 2.3 kW before losses. This is a worked power example, not a universal permitted setting.
Socket condition matters. Domestic contacts can wear or loosen. Use no extension lead, and stop if the connection becomes hot or discoloured.
What is a CEE socket?
CEE commonly describes industrial plugs and sockets covered by IEC 60309. Their shape and key position identify voltage and purpose. Their physical size also changes with current rating.
- Blue three-pin CEE is commonly 230 V single-phase.
- Red five-pin CEE is commonly 400 V three-phase.
- A 16 A and 32 A connector are different sizes.
Read the markings on the actual socket. Industrial sites may use other arrangements, voltages or key positions.
How much faster is CEE charging?
| Connection | Current and phases | Input power | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Household socket, illustrative input | 10 A, one phase | 2.3 kW | Conditional, low daily energy need |
| Blue CEE 16 A | 16 A, one phase | 3.7 kW | Faster single-phase charging |
| Red CEE 16 A | 16 A, three phase | 11 kW | Common three-phase EV limit |
| Red CEE 32 A | 32 A, three phase | 22 kW | Cars and supplies that support 22 kW |
The onboard charger in the car caps AC speed. An 11 kW car still charges at no more than 11 kW on a 22 kW supply. A single-phase car cannot use all three phases merely because the socket has them.
Can you use an adapter?
Do not use a general travel or charging adapter between the vehicle connector and the car. On the supply side, use only a manufacturer-listed interchangeable cable or plug system where its instructions and local rules permit it.
The documented system must maintain protective earth and limit the offered current for the upstream socket. Never join adapters or plugs to create an unlisted combination.
The smallest rating wins
A 32 A charger connected through a manufacturer-listed 16 A supply cable or plug must be limited to 16 A. Its instructions must explain how the system enforces this limit. Local rules must permit the complete connection.
Where might you find each socket?
Household sockets are common in garages and homes. Blue CEE sockets are often used at campsites, marinas and workshops. Red CEE sockets are common in workshops, farms and buildings with three-phase equipment.
Availability does not equal permission. Ask the owner before charging. Confirm the circuit rating and any site current limit. At a campsite, the supply may be shared or protected below the connector’s marked maximum.
Is CEE better than a wallbox?
A correctly installed CEE socket plus a compliant portable charger can be flexible. The charger travels with the car, and manufacturer-listed interchangeable supply cables or plugs can serve different permitted locations.
A wallbox is often easier for daily use. It may keep the cable ready, prevent unauthorised use and adjust charging around the household load. It also avoids repeated plugging at the supply socket.
Choose CEE when mobility matters and the socket is already suitable. Choose a wallbox when everyday convenience or load control matters more. In both cases, an electrician must size the circuit and protection for the intended load.
Frequently asked questions
Is CEE charging faster than Schuko charging?
It can be. A blue CEE 16 A socket supports about 3.7 kW, while a red CEE 16 A three-phase socket supports about 11 kW. A household socket at 10 A supplies about 2.3 kW.
What is the difference between red and blue CEE?
Blue CEE is commonly 230 V single-phase. Red five-pin CEE is commonly 400 V three-phase. Both exist in more than one current rating, so read the markings.
Can I adapt a CEE charger to a household socket?
Only with a manufacturer-listed interchangeable supply cable or plug system where its instructions and local rules permit it. The system must maintain earth and enforce the supply-side current limit.
Does a CEE socket replace a wallbox?
A CEE socket and compliant portable charger can provide the same basic AC power. A wallbox may be more convenient and can add load management, access control and solar features.
